Weekly Music Round-Up

Read our re-cap of our what went down this past week in our weekly music round-up featuring trippy videos, producer challenges and beef responses.

Dark Paradise

Following the build-up of hype from the features and singles dropped during the course of the past few weeks, PatricKxxLee has just dropped the electric visuals for the track Dark Paradise. The vivid reds, purples and blues – constant throughout the trap song’s video – against the darker visuals, create the exact energizing contrast carried throughout the song’s softer vocals and upbeat production. This strong connection makes sense when considering that the video was directed and edited by PactricKxxLee as well as by Jenny Tan.

3Peat?

Nicki Minaj had just released the 3 Pack From Paris including Regret In Your Tears, Changed It featuring Weezy F and No Frauds featuring the YM boss and Drizzy (the latter is a response to Remy Ma’s Shether). Nostalgic single arts from the height of Young Money’s rebranding might draw in most fans but the music is the bottom line. Do you think Barbie got one over Remy?

Fernando and Dada Shiva Make Water

If Dada Shiva’s colourful rap style or Fernando’s smooth, artful beats aren’t enough to carry a track on their own, then I don’t what is. So when the two collaborated on a song earlier this week, it was interesting to see what the two talents would produce: would it feature the very abstract, experimental elements that Dada Shiva is known for? Or would it be a more mellow take on the sound with the distinct touch of Fernando? The product is an interesting blend of the two. Water sees Shiva vigorously spitting about his skill accompanied by the jazz meets soul meets hip-hop production of Fernando, which features piano and brass sounds, giving the song more life.

(Can’t Spell That Nardwuar Sound Off Top)

Vince Staples recent stop in British Columbia comes along with probably the funniest Nardwuar interview in a hot minute. The Long Beach California native playfully roasts his mentor No I.D. and uncle Snoop while denying any connection to the militia just because of his pigment. Find out how Ja Rule saved Vince’s life ya’ll.

You Don’t Got No Hot Sauce

Young M.A.’s run-turned-sprint-turned-soar into 2017 has been fun to watch; the conversations around the rapper are getting louder and her momentum is picking up.  This week, Young M.A. dropped her latest single, Hot Sauce. It’s another banger with an unfazed M.A spitting about her esteem, or ‘hot sauce’ , decorated with her signature “OOOOOUUUUU”

That Nigga Lex Luger

In the wake of the gargantuan battle between Swizz Beatz and Just Blaze last week, veteran trap specialist Lex Luger challenged Sonny Digital, Southside (808 Mafia) and Metro Boomin’ to a beat battle. Fans have been eagerly awaiting a battle versus Zaytoven but the BMF producer opted for 3 opponents, making this something to really look forward to if Southside could put the money issue behind him.
