After a week as exciting yet draining as this one, we need to sit down quick and re-cap. Between album speculations, surprise releases and merely keeping up with regular drops, this week was a busy one. Read our round-up.
Ain’t Shit Changed
For its seventh anniversary, maestro and the hit maker behind ‘Mezmorized’, Cardo [GOT WANGZ] just dropped 3 unreleased songs from Wiz Khalifa‘s blassik Kush & OJ tape. ‘Get It On Your Own’, ‘The Lost Files’ and ‘Coachella’ are the extras that we couldn’t get to enjoy back then – and it’s been a minute since Young Khalifa hopped on a Cardo jawn so this is definitely a pleasant surprise. The site ain’t shabby neither, so you should scope.
Less than 24 hours after the release of Kendrick Lamar’s highly anticipated album drop, DAMN., Travis Scott released the visuals for the King Kendrick- featured and widely appreciated song, ‘Goosebumps’. Though Travis might not need the hype assistance, but possibly a strategic drop? The song is featured on Travis’ late 2016 album Birds In The Trap Sing Brian McKnight and is an “eerie love song” in which Travis and Kendrick detail their love. The visuals, equally as eerie and busy as the song is filled with quick motions, bright colours, distorted images, and odd, unexpected animations.
Ca$h Carti B***h!
Two years after his breakout hit ‘Broke Boi’, Playboi Carti finally released his debut, self-titled mixtape this past Friday. The former Awful Records disciple and current AWGE member kept the features to a minimum with compadre Lil’ Uzi Vert on two tracks, the multitalented Leven Kali on the proverbial Flex song and Lord Pretty Flacko with a fuego contribution on New Choppa. Magnolia is the gem of the tape and will undoubtedly get endless spins but was it worth the wait?
(the alternative cover is ingenious too.)
More Dilla for us… Kind of
Another J Dilla tribute for us came courtesy of DJ Harrison, in his ‘RollSkate/KalimbaTale’ new release off of his upcoming project tiled HazyMoods, which is scheduled to come out in June. The song is a J Dilla re-interpretation and couldn’t have come at a better time.
Summer Starts Now
Our favourite Cousin Stizz dispatched a new collabo with Migos head honcho Offset this week, and man does this shit slap! Produced by Vinylz (Cut The Check, Pick Up The Phone, Blessings …) this new heater tackles the precarious situation of having said “drank” in a wrestling headlock or maybe its just a bop with two of the hottest on the mic right now. Looking for a 3peat, One Night Only drops on May 12th. Stizz SZN juuhurd.
It would almost go without posting the news that Kendrick Lamar’s 4th studio album was released this week. If not the splurge of Twitter talk about it, or the blog posts on the evolution of Kendrick, then your mere inquisition about the artist’s approach would have led you to delve deep into the album and its contents. The 14-track album has faced an array of responses: critique from listeners saying that it isn’t Kendrick’s best effort yet; fans praising it, dubbing it a classic; and skeptics holding their breath in anticipation of a speculated real album drop on Sunday. Regardless what your stance, you’d probably agree that the project is well-crafted, and opens the door to so much discussion around Kendrick’s artistry.
Peek A Boo
Lil’ Boat, uhm… Yachty links up with his Quality Control amigos (lol) for the aptly titled Peek A Boo. Ricky Racks behind the boards on this slow burner but our favorite trio always know how to liven up any mood. The video is dark and edgy, featuring an infinite amount of diamonds (Pikachu) and the all black fit to match. Ironically enough, the Migos also have a song called Peek A Boo off their 2014 blassik No Label 2 although that was produced by Metro Boomin and Zaytoven.
